US Strikes Iranian Tankers, Warning of Escalation in Middle East Tensions
The US military has taken decisive action against Iranian oil tankers in response to repeated attempts by Iran to hit US warships with ballistic missiles. The strikes, carried out on Tuesday, targeted five Iranian vessels in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to US Central Command, the crews of the five vessels were given advance warning to abandon ship before the attacks. No American personnel were harmed in the strikes, which come just three days after US forces destroyed three Iranian oil tankers in a similar incident.
The latest tit-for-tat exchanges between the US and Iran have raised concerns about further escalation in the region, with experts warning that such actions can only risk more retaliation and further impact to the global economy.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US will not allow Iran's attacks to go unanswered, saying 'for every time they do that or try to do that, they're going to lose tankers'.
