The US military has struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to reported missile attacks on American warships. The strikes, carried out by an aircraft carrier and a destroyer, targeted vessels that were part of a shadow network helping to fund Iran's Revolutionary Guard and its armed proxies in the region.

According to the US military, two of the tankers were 'permanently disabled' while a third was destroyed. The strikes came after six months of on-again, off-again war that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.

The US had warned that it would 'if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet.' The statement also said that the tankers were part of a network helping to fund Iran's Revolutionary Guard and its armed proxies in the region.
