US Strikes Three Iranian Oil Tankers in Retaliation for Alleged Attacks
The United States has launched an attack on three Iranian oil tankers in response to what it claims were 'multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks' on a US aircraft carrier and destroyer. The strike, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in two of the tankers being 'permanently disabled' and one being destroyed.
The tankers targeted by the US were the M/T Downy, which was struck off Kharg Island, and the M/T Stark 1, which was hit near the port of Jask. The third tanker, the unladen M/T Kylo, was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman.
The US Central Command claimed that it was responding to Iranian aggression, with Admiral Brad Cooper stating, 'We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet.'
