US Struggles to Break Free from Middle East Oil Dependence

The US is struggling to overcome its dependence on Middle East oil, despite promises from presidents since Jimmy Carter to loosen their grip on the economy.

The problem lies in the difference between American production and that of the Middle East. The US primarily produces light, sweet crude from shale formations, while the Middle East supplies heavier, higher-sulfur crude. Older refineries in the US were not designed to process this heavier crude, making it costly to build new ones or retrofit existing facilities.

The environmental concerns and shift towards renewable energy have also made investing in new refineries a financial risk for some. President Trump has spoken with the UK's prime minister about tapping into North Sea oil reserves, which could boost the UK economy.

Critics argue that allowing offshore drilling in California and Florida would reduce our reliance on Middle East oil, but environmentalists raise concerns about oil spills and damage to wildlife. Improved technology has reduced the likelihood of such events, but some still view it as a risk worth taking.
