US Targets Iran with Broad Economic Sanctions Campaign
The US government has launched a broad economic campaign against Iran, sanctioning nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels. The Treasury Department's Operation Economic Outcast targets networks involved in procuring nuclear and missile technology, as well as oil revenue networks operating through brokers, companies, and shadow-fleet vessels.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington is 'entering the endgame' and described the campaign as an 'economic D-Day.' He stated that the objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains Iran's 'tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.'
The sanctions also affect digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping sectors. Financial institutions found to be facilitating money laundering or sanctions evasion on Iran's behalf could be cut off from the US dollar system.
Iran has responded by threatening to halt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf if other countries support Washington's campaign. Tehran would regard any country's participation as 'an act of war.'
