US Targets Iranian Oil Tankers in Escalating Conflict
The conflict between the US and Iran escalated on September 8 as the US military confirmed it struck five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to a missile attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeting two American warships.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes targeted multiple vessels, including three on September 5: the M/T Downy off Kharg Island, the M/T Stark 1 near Jask on the eastern coast of the Strait of Hormuz, and a third unladen tanker, the M/T Kylo, in the Gulf of Oman.
The crew of the M/T Kylo was warned to abandon ship before the strike, while the M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1 were permanently disabled. Two additional tankers were struck in the days that followed, bringing the total to five.
