US to Tap Venezuelan Oil for Strategic Reserve Refill

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will use Venezuelan crude to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The move, described by Trump as a 'Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States,' is expected to begin soon, according to Reuters.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been drawn close to minimum operational levels due to increased U.S. crude oil exports in response to the crisis in the Middle East. As of August 21, the SPR held 290 million barrels, the lowest level in almost 44 years.

Venezuela's oil production is not rising as quickly as hoped, with exports averaging 1.16 million barrels daily last month, a slight decline from June's 1.2 million barrels daily. The country also faces port capacity constraints, with tankers having to wait up to 30 days to load due to power outages and quality problems.

Despite these challenges, Venezuela did export oil to the United States at an average rate of 786,000 barrels daily in July, the highest since early 2019. The U.S. federal government is also negotiating a direct ownership stake in one of Venezuela's high-yield fields, which contains combined reserves of 90 billion barrels of crude.
