US Trade Deficit Narrows as Exports Surge to Record High
The US trade deficit narrowed significantly in April as exports reached an all-time high. The Commerce Department reported that the nation's trade gap in goods and services decreased due to strong demand for American products abroad, particularly industrial supplies, capital goods, and services.
Exports increased by 2.6% to $327.1 billion, a record high, with goods exports surging 4.1% to a record $221.3 billion. Petroleum exports reached a record high of $36.7 billion from $27.6 billion in March, driven by higher volumes and oil prices tied to the Middle East conflict.
Economists said that the gains suggest US businesses remain competitive internationally despite economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions weighing on global trade flows.
