US Treasury Unleashes Economic Outcast on Iran
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the launch of Operation Economic Outcast on August 24, 2026. The campaign aims to sever Iran's remaining economic lifelines, targeting digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping sectors.
The initiative builds on the earlier Operation Economic Fury maximum-pressure campaign, expanding secondary sanctions risks across key sectors identified as Iran's vital foreign connections. Over 60 entities, individuals, and vessels linked to nuclear/missile procurement, cyber operations, and oil revenue generation were simultaneously sanctioned by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
The move follows months of naval blockade measures that have severely constrained Iranian oil exports and prior actions targeting shadow banking networks, cryptocurrency holdings, and related facilitators. Iran's economy was already under extreme strain, with the rial hitting successive record lows on the unregulated market.
Rumors of a physical attack on the central bank were denied, but cyber disruptions have been ongoing. Brent crude traded in the low-to-mid $90s per barrel range on August 24, with analysts noting that further isolation of Iranian barrels could support higher prices if it removes remaining supply without broader escalation.
