US Treasury Vows Largest Financial Strike on Iran: Global Pariah Status for Non-Compliant Countries
The US Treasury has announced plans to impose its strongest economic sanctions yet on Iran, warning countries that do not comply will become 'global pariahs.'
In an op-ed published in the Financial Times, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wrote that the sanctions would be the largest single financial attack ever made against an adversary. He cited several examples of complicity with Iran, including purchases and transport of Iranian oil, financial and commercial transactions with Iran, and allowing Iranian aircraft to land.
Bessent invoked Pascal's wager, a theological argument that suggests believing in God is more advantageous than not believing due to the risk of eternal damnation. He stated that countries maintaining ties with Iran would see every path to sustainable prosperity blocked, adding 'becoming a haven for terror makes you, in America's eyes, a global pariah.'
Bessent also stressed that the era of appeasing Iran is over under President Trump, and that those who fear standing up to Tehran should not underestimate the expense of testing Washington. He emphasized that the US goal is to sever every economic lifeline of the Iranian regime, with no clear end date in sight.
