US Treasury Yields Surge as Iran Tensions Push Oil Prices Higher

US Treasury yields surged on Tuesday as renewed tensions in the Middle East pushed up borrowing costs in bond markets. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level since January 14, 2025, reaching 4.788%. This marks a significant increase from its previous peak and has investors concerned about the impact of higher oil prices and inflation on the economy.

The US Treasury's 30-year yield also moved higher, climbing by more than 2 basis points to around 5.272%. The 30-year yield is closely tied to long-term concerns such as inflation, economic growth, and geopolitical risks. Its rise suggests that investors are demanding greater returns to hold long-dated US government debt amid uncertainty about the economic outlook.

Renewed tensions in the Middle East have pushed oil prices higher, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures rising over 1% to above $87 a barrel and Brent crude also moving higher. Higher oil prices are fueling inflation fears, as more expensive crude can raise the cost of fuel, transportation, and other goods and services.

UBS warned that several factors are keeping pressure on the bond market, including uncertainty around the Federal Reserve's policy outlook, US fiscal concerns, and rising AI-related debt issuance. The bank's chief investment officer, Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, noted that 'yield volatility is likely to persist in the near term', suggesting that investors could continue to see sharp moves in government bond yields as new economic and geopolitical developments emerge.
