US Unleashes 'Operation Economic Outcast' to Isolate Iran from Global Financial System

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has unveiled 'Operation Economic Outcast', a sweeping sanctions campaign aimed at cutting off Iran's remaining channels for moving money and selling oil globally.

The operation is not just targeting Iran, but also every country and institution still doing business with it. The Treasury Department has already sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels as part of the rollout, focusing on networks involved in illicit procurement of nuclear and missile technology, cyber operations, and oil smuggling.

Bessent emphasized that there will be no public deadline for countries to cut ties with Iran, but warned that each country will face its own compliance clock. The absence of a hard deadline is seen as part of the deliberate escalation strategy, ratcheting up pressure repeatedly rather than issuing one ultimatum.

The operation affects countries like China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Qatar, and Turkey, which have significant trading relationships with Iran. For India specifically, the risk isn't a new import ban, but whether the campaign's broader sectors, shipping and financial services in particular, start catching Indian-linked entities that handle Iran-adjacent trade indirectly.

Iran has acknowledged that its exports have dropped nearly 35% due to sanctions, but claims it has still met more than 60% of its annual oil revenue target. The pressure campaign is part of a six-month arc of economic warfare against Iran's revenue and terror-financing networks.
