US-Venezuela Oil Deal Finalized, But Impact on Prices Remains Uncertain
A long-awaited deal between the US and Venezuela to expand American involvement in Venezuelan oil production has been finalized, but its impact on US energy prices may not be felt for years. The agreement grants North American Blue Energy Partners access to 17 oil fields with a proven reserve of about 65 billion barrels, with the Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital taking a 35% equity stake.
US officials claim this deal will take time to develop and require an estimated $100 billion in capital investment. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said additional operators would need to be brought in to meet the scale of the operation, but that 'this is brand new'.
The Trump administration brokered the deal following the capture of former leader Nicolás Maduro, but analysts have raised concerns about its viability under future Venezuelan leadership.
