US-Venezuela Oil Deal Finalized, But Questions Remain About Details
The Trump administration has finalized a deal to expand American involvement in Venezuelan oil production. North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) will have access to 17 oil fields, holding about 65 billion barrels of proven reserves, for a century. The US government has taken a significant stake in the joint venture: the Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital owns 35% of NABEP, and the State Department will get first refusal on 80% of the oil.
The deal is seen as a major coup for Trump, who called it 'the biggest oil deal, by far, in World history!'. However, Energy Secretary Chris Wright acknowledged that it may take years to see any impact on US energy supply. He also noted that additional partnerships will be formed to develop the resources.
Some analysts have raised concerns about the viability of this deal under future Venezuelan leadership. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez stressed that Venezuela retains ownership and sovereignty over its resources. Meanwhile, Chevron has announced a $7 billion investment in Venezuelan oil production with the goal of doubling output by 2031.
