US Weighs Historic Stake in Venezuelan Oil Industry
The United States is considering investing in Venezuela's oil industry through long-term leasing arrangements for multiple fields. This unprecedented move would give the US government a stake in Venezuelan petroleum assets, which are estimated to hold around 100 billion barrels of recoverable crude.
Venezuela's oil reserves are among the world's largest, according to OPEC data. The country's strategic location allows it to export oil without navigating high-risk maritime bottlenecks like the Strait of Hormuz, providing supply chain stability compared to other producers.
The potential US investment is seen as a way to revitalize Venezuela's underdeveloped energy infrastructure and increase its petroleum output. Chevron Corp., currently the only American company operating in Venezuela, is also pursuing expansion opportunities that would incorporate additional production sites.
