US Wheat Gains Ground in Indonesia as Competition Heats Up for Australia

Indonesia's wheat imports are set to take on a new dimension as the country is expected to significantly increase purchases from the United States. According to the US Department of Agriculture, Indonesia imports an average of 10.8 million tons of wheat annually.

The new trade agreement between Indonesia and the US is forecast to boost US wheat exports to nearly 2 million tons in 2026. This represents a substantial increase from the 1.09 million tons imported in 2025.

Indonesia's reliance on imports is due to its own limited production, with no domestic wheat output. The country's imports have been steadily increasing, reaching an estimated 13.4 million tons in the 2025/26 season and forecast to ease to 12.5 million tons in 2026/27.

The development is expected to intensify competition for Australia, which has traditionally been Indonesia's largest wheat export market. The country accounted for 18% of Australia's wheat exports in the 2024/25 season and 21% in the 2025/26 season through May.
