US Wheat Prices Spike Amid Global Turmoil
Wheat prices have been on the move in recent times, with hard red winter wheat prices in Kansas averaging between $6.69 to $6.83 per bushel, a significant increase from last year's prices of $4.17 to $4.24 a bushel.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported a decrease in wheat production numbers, forecasting 1.531 billion bushels for the 2026-2027 crop year, down 5 million bushels from July.
According to Guy Allen, a senior economist at the IGP Institute at Kansas State University, several variables are at play in the wheat market, including the Russian-Ukraine conflict and its impact on wheat exports.
