USDA Taps Tech to Boost Crop Estimates Amid Farm Optimism

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is launching a pilot project to improve its crop acreage and yield estimates. The modernization plan, announced by USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa, will rely on technology such as satellite imagery, geospatial tools, and crop models.

The pilot project will use data from NASA and other federal agencies to estimate crop yields and acreage. It also aims to explore the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Farmer sentiment has improved for a second month in a row, according to the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, which rose 9 points in August.

The survey found that farmers are more optimistic about export prospects but still concerned about high input costs, low crop and livestock prices, and rising interest rates. Grain futures have started September on a strong note, with corn, wheat, and soybeans reaching contract highs.
