VA Sweet Corn Harvest Expected Despite Drought

Sweet corn is a staple of summer in Virginia, but concerns about this year's crop were valid given the drought that has gripped the Commonwealth for a year.

Agriculture experts say corn farmers in Southwest and Central Virginia should have fair to good harvests, especially if they had access to irrigation. This is despite the effects of inflation on sweet corn prices.

In a look at prices around the Roanoke region, it was found that unhusked sweet corn is selling for two ears for a dollar, down from three ears in years past. Despite this drop in price, sales have been good.

Agriculture experts recommend looking for green husks, moist brown or yellow silk at the top, and firm plump kernels when buying sweet corn in the husk.
