Vaalco Etame Field's Decline Highlights Gabon's Oil Sector Challenges
The Vaalco Etame field in Gabon has been producing oil for over two decades, with cumulative output exceeding 100 million barrels. The field is a testament to the slow decline of offshore oil fields, where production fades gradually over years rather than suddenly.
Vaalco Energy, the US-based operator, holds a significant working interest in the block and has implemented infrastructure upgrades to reduce logistical costs. However, the field's reservoir performance is structurally constrained, limiting its potential for growth.
The decline of the Etame field is part of a broader trend in Gabon's oil sector, where legacy fields are depleting faster than new discoveries can replace them. The country's total oil output has contracted by 38% over three decades, highlighting the need for investment in exploration and appraisal activities.
Vaalco's CEO George Maxwell has indicated that the company is pursuing a dual-track operational strategy to lower costs and test remaining reservoir upside. This includes commissioning a new gas well to supply power directly to the platform and drilling an appraisal well targeting bypassed reservoir zones.
