Vaca Muerta Emerges as Global NGL Player
The Vaca Muerta region in Argentina is poised to become a significant player in the global natural gas liquids (NGL) market, thanks to a joint development agreement signed by state-owned YPF, Italian energy major Eni, and XRG, ADNOC's investment subsidiary. This agreement marks a turning point for Argentina's energy sector and the global NGL supply chain, which is facing tightening petrochemical feedstock availability.
The global NGL market totals around 600 million metric tonnes annually, with North America as the leading producer. However, Asian petrochemical demand continues to grow, driven by emerging economies' consumption growth and new cracker capacity in Asia. Traditional suppliers face production plateaus, making supply diversification increasingly important.
The proposed 12 MTPA FLNG facility processing Vaca Muerta's wet gas could recover an estimated 6-9 million metric tonnes per year of ethane, 3-4 million metric tonnes per year of propane, and 1.25-1.75 million metric tonnes per year of butane.
Argentina's projected volumes would provide significant supply to Asian crackers seeking alternatives to US cargoes. While transit around Cape Horn adds cost and time compared with US Gulf Coast shipments, geographic diversification appeals to buyers hedging against supply concentration risk.
