Venezuela Oil Deal May Take Years to Impact US Gas Prices

President Trump's administration recently announced a deal to open up Venezuela's oil reserves to private developers. This agreement aims to increase U.S. oil supplies, which President Trump claims will 'substantially lower Gas Prices for all Americans, long into the future.'

The deal gives access to 17 strategic oil fields in Venezuela with proven reserves of 65 billion barrels of oil. However, petroleum industry experts warn that developing these sites and processing the extracted heavy crude, which is more difficult to refine into fuel products, will take years.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted on his blog that while other market factors may help bring down fuel prices in the short term, it won't be due to the newly opened Venezuelan oil fields. He stated that 'the timeline to develop those sites is likely years away and not likely to impact record high fuel costs currently facing U.S. drivers.'

High gas prices have been a concern for U.S. drivers, with the national average price reaching $4.08 per gallon on Monday. Utah motorists are paying an average of $4.37 per gallon across the state, which is up 10 cents from last month and $1.08 higher than this time last year.

The factors contributing to high fuel prices include ongoing disruptions caused by the Iran war and Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil installations.
