Venezuela Oil Deal Sparks Hopes for Replenished US Reserves
President Trump recently announced an agreement between the US and Venezuela that would allow American companies to develop 17 Venezuelan oil fields containing more than 65 billion barrels of proven reserves. This deal, which gives a US-backed venture majority control over these fields, is touted as a 'gift' to the American people in the form of replenished Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) stocks.
The SPR currently holds around 290 million barrels, its lowest level in 44 years. Filling it completely would require roughly 420 million barrels, and even restoring it to its pre-March levels of about 415 million barrels would need an additional 121 million barrels.
However, the key issue here is not just the sheer size of the reserves but also their accessibility. The Venezuelan oil fields in question contain extra-heavy crude from the Orinoco Belt, which is much heavier than the SPR's current inventory and requires specific storage and operational considerations.
