Venezuela Oil Deal Won't Lower US Gas Prices Anytime Soon
The US has reached an agreement with Venezuela to give American companies access to its vast oil reserves. The deal, announced by President Donald Trump on August 31, grants the US a key role in Venezuela's oil industry and promises billions of dollars' worth of oil at favorable prices.
However, experts warn that this will not translate into lower gasoline prices for American consumers anytime soon. It may take years before Venezuelan oil production expands significantly, and even then, it will be influenced by various factors such as infrastructure investments and the political stability of the country.
Under the agreement, the US will establish a joint partnership with North American Blue Energy Partners to manage 17 Venezuelan oil fields containing 65 billion barrels of proven reserves. The US government will hold a 35% stake in the company and have a guaranteed right to buy 20% of the oil produced without a price markup.
The deal has raised concerns about the role of the Pentagon in investing in Venezuela's oil industry, with Senate Armed Services ranking Democrat Jack Reed calling it an 'abuse of power' and 'taxpayer dollars.'
