Vietnamese Power Sector Sees Record Growth Amid Heatwave
The power sector in Vietnam has experienced significant growth during the peak dry season, driven by strong electricity demand and record-breaking heatwaves. According to state utility EVN, electricity production and imports in H1 reached 171.54 billion kWh, up 9.85% year-on-year.
Q2 output rose 12.7% to 94.7 billion kWh, a particularly strong increase of 23.2% over Q1. Coal-fired power remained the main source, generating 93.44 billion kWh, or 54.5% of total output.
Hydropower contributed 36.1 billion kWh, or 21%, while gas-fired turbines generated 13.71 billion kWh, accounting for 8%. Renewable energy contributed 22.12 billion kWh, or 12.9%, with solar power making up 14.59 billion kWh and wind power contributing 6.63 billion kWh.
The National Power System and Market Operation Company (NSMO) dispatched oil-fired units at the O Mon thermal power plant to meet system demand, while some gas-fired turbine units were switched from natural gas to diesel fuel to increase available capacity.
