Virginia Gas Prices Soar as Global Tensions Fuel Fuel Market Volatility
Virginia's gas prices have been steadily rising over the past week, according to recent data from AAA. As of Monday, the statewide average for regular gasoline had reached $4.14 per gallon, a nearly 18-cent increase from just one week prior. This brings the state's average price back up to levels seen in March, despite typically declining prices during this time of year.
Meanwhile, diesel fuel prices have climbed even faster, reaching an average of $6.16 per gallon in Virginia on Monday. Several markets within the state are now posting record high prices for diesel, including Fredericksburg at $6.19 and the Washington metropolitan area at $6.20.
The reasons behind these rising prices are complex, but according to AAA, they can be attributed to a combination of factors, including higher oil prices and global supply concerns. The group pointed out that despite the increases, Virginia remains below the national average for gasoline prices, which stood at around $4.32 per gallon on Monday.
Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, noted that tensions involving Iran, hostilities in the Red Sea, and refinery disruptions are all contributing to the pressure on fuel markets. While the switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline may provide some seasonal relief, continued geopolitical disruptions could keep prices volatile.
