Virginia Sweet Corn Harvest Expected to Thrive Despite Drought

Sweet corn farmers in Virginia are breathing a sigh of relief as this year's harvest is expected to be good despite the drought that has gripped the state for over a year.

Agriculture experts say corn farmers in Southwest and Central Virginia should have fair to good harvests, especially those with access to irrigation.

The drought had raised concerns about the crop, but farmers who have access to water are likely to see a successful harvest. The prices of sweet corn, however, have been affected by inflation, with unhusked sweet corn selling for two ears for a dollar in the Roanoke region, compared to one dollar for three ears in previous years.

Sales of sweet corn have remained good despite the price increase, and experts recommend checking for green husks, moist brown or yellow silk at the top (rejecting black tarry silk), and firm, plump kernels when selecting the best ears.
