Virginia Sweet Corn Harvest Expected to Thrive Despite Drought

Sweet corn is a staple of summer in Virginia, but drought concerns have been on people's minds. However, agriculture experts say that despite the dry conditions, farmers in Southwest and Central Virginia should be able to have fair to good harvests - especially if they had access to irrigation.

Prices for sweet corn have also increased due to inflation, with unhusked ears selling for two dollars a dollar in many places. In comparison, three ears were once available for the same price. Despite this, sales have remained strong.

Agriculture experts recommend looking for green husks and moist brown or yellow silk when buying sweet corn. Black tarry silk should be avoided. Additionally, feel the ear for fullness with firm, plump kernels.
