Wall Street Indices Plummet Amid Ongoing Global Uncertainty
The past week has been brutal for Wall Street as oil prices soared, interest rates rose, and concerns about an extended war in the Middle East weighed on investors. Despite solid earnings reports from some companies, major indices including the Nasdaq, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrials closed lower by 2.15%, 1.48%, and 0.97% respectively. The small-cap-heavy Russell 2000 fared slightly better, closing down just 0.88%. Treasury yields continued their upward trend, with the 30-year long bond ending at 5.17% and the 10-year note at 4.70%. Oil benchmarks Brent Crude and West Texas Intermediate rose by 6.15% and 5.46%, while natural gas prices dropped slightly.
The precious metal gold bucked the trend, falling 1.95% to $4,048 as traders cited a stronger U.S. dollar, surging oil prices, and inflation concerns. Silver also declined, closing at $57.42 down 3.46%. Cryptocurrencies took a hit as well, with Bitcoin dipping below the $65,000, $66,000 range and Ethereum retreating toward $1,890.
