Wall Street's stock market is experiencing a shift in focus, with many of its top performers struggling to maintain their gains. Computer chipmakers and AI-related stocks are taking a hit, while oil prices continue to fall.

The S&P 500 rose 0.3% in midday trading on Tuesday, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 567 points, or 1.1%, as of 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite, which is heavily weighted with AI stocks, dropped 0.1% after briefly falling 9.3% below its record set last month.

Several major companies, including Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams, reported stronger-than-expected profits for the spring quarter, driving their stock prices up. However, the AI chipmakers Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices, and Applied Materials are among those that have seen significant declines, with Micron dropping 9.1%.

Equity analyst Jing Jie Yu of Morningstar attributes the market's losses to concerns over China's advancements in chipmaking equipment capabilities, which may threaten the competitive position of global leaders. However, he believes the sell-off is largely a 'knee-jerk reaction' and that the dominant position of these leaders will not be significantly impacted.
