Wall Street Slumps Amid Oil Price Hike Concerns and Rising Interest Rates
Wall Street experienced a decline on Monday due to concerns about oil prices and interest rates. The S&P 500 slipped 0.5%, while the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 0.3% and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.6%. Tech stocks, particularly those involved in AI, were among the hardest hit, with Nvidia plummeting 3.4% and SpaceX falling 2% after Elon Musk's endorsement of a slowdown in AI development.
The rise in oil prices has been driven by tensions in the Middle East, with Brent crude reaching $105.68 per barrel and the average cost of regular gasoline crossing $4.32 per gallon nationwide. This increase in oil prices has put upward pressure on inflation, leading many to expect a Federal Reserve rate hike at its next meeting.
Despite these losses, several software companies bucked the trend, with Intuit rising 5.5%, Autodesk climbing 7.8%, and Adobe adding 5.3%. President Donald Trump downplayed concerns about AI development, saying that a strong and smart president was the only guardrail needed to protect humanity.
