Wall Street's major indexes drifted to a mixed close on Monday as oil prices dropped due to a decrease in Mideast tensions. The S&P 500 rose less than 0.1% after spending much of the day fluctuating between small gains and losses, marking its third weekly loss this month.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%, while the Nasdaq composite fell 0.2%, its fourth consecutive decline. The three major indexes are on pace to close out July in the red for the second time in a row.

Brent crude prices dropped 6.3% to settle at $85.87 a barrel for October delivery, reversing course from last week's surge above $100 per barrel. U.S. crude oil for September delivery fell 7.5% to settle at $82.61 a barrel.
