Wanxiang Doneed's Corn Seed Business Hit by Oversupply and Intense Competition
SSE-listed Wanxiang Doneed saw its first-half net profit plummet by 44.47% year-over-year, slipping to 13.8 million yuan (approximately $2.0 million). The decline was more pronounced when deducting non-recurring items, with net profit tumbling by 52.19% to 11.47 million yuan ($1.7 million).
The company's core corn seed operations are facing significant challenges due to oversupply and intense competition in the market. During the reporting period, Wanxiang Doneed posted first-half revenue of 99.47 million yuan (approximately $14.7 million), down 15.14% year-over-year.
While the company's corn seed sales volume remained flat at 6.61 million kilograms compared to the same period last year, the average selling price has decreased significantly due to low-price promotions becoming the market norm. This 'volume growth without revenue growth' highlights the industry's pressing challenge of escaping the quagmire of low-price promotions through variety innovation and differentiated competition.
The company's balance sheet shows a total asset value of 666 million yuan (approximately $98.7 million) as of the end of the reporting period, down 9.78% from year-end. Net assets attributable to shareholders also declined by 2.89% to 520 million yuan ($77.1 million).
