Weaner Pig Breakeven Plunges to $26.68

Instruments

The weaner pig breakeven price fell to $26.68 this week, down $6.51 from last week's figure of $33.19. This means that a farmer who buys weaners at the current market rate would need to sell them in January 2027 for a loss of $23.53 per head compared to the average cash price of $50.21.

The breakeven price is calculated by NutriQuest Business Solutions using industry representative production costs and futures pricing for lean hogs, corn, and soybean meal. The company uses historical basis assumptions to determine the approximate profitability and break-even pricing for weaner pigs. Feed costs decreased $3.20 per head this week, while February futures fell by $4.63.

The 'margin over variable costs' is a more relevant figure for producers with empty space, as it represents the maximum price a buyer could pay for a weaner pig and breakeven at $52.79.
