West Africa Pushes for Local Fuel Pricing Mechanism

West Africa is moving to establish its own fuel pricing mechanism to reduce reliance on foreign benchmarks. Nigeria, a major crude oil and natural gas producer, is leading this effort.

The initiative comes as several African countries expand refining capacity to reduce dependence on imported fuels and strengthen regional energy security. According to Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, Chief Executive of the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), 'Virtually every major energy market in the world operates its own pricing index.'

The second West Africa Refined Fuel Conference, scheduled for August 11-12 in Abuja, will focus on building a more integrated regional petroleum market. The conference aims to attract investment into infrastructure needed to support transparent pricing and cross-border fuel trade.
