Westcoast Energy Proposes $178 MMcf/d Pipeline Expansion in BC
Westcoast Energy Limited Partnership has filed an application with the Canada Energy Regulator to expand its natural gas transmission infrastructure in northeastern British Columbia. The proposed Birch Grove Program would increase capacity on the company's T-North pipeline system by up to 178 MMcf/d, which is expected to support growing regional natural gas demand and future liquefied natural gas export opportunities from Western Canada.
The project involves approximately 20 miles of new pipeline looping near Taylor, British Columbia, as well as restoration of maximum operating pressure on a section of the Boundary Lake Pipeline. Compressor Stations 01, 02, and 16 would also undergo modifications, including cooling facility additions, piping and filtration upgrades, control-system modifications, and other tie-in work.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027 pending regulatory approval, with an anticipated in-service date in the third quarter of 2028. The project aims to support growing regional natural gas demand and future liquefied natural gas export opportunities from Western Canada, according to Westcoast and Enbridge.
