Western Gas Prices Skyrocket Amid Heatwave, Northeast Hubs Plummet
Natural gas prices rose across the West during the August bidweek due to high temperatures that boosted cooling demand in Texas, California, and other western states.
The region's prices jumped as utilities scrambled to meet peak electricity needs, but this increase was largely offset by a sharp pullback in Eastern hubs, resulting in a stable national average price.
Specifically, the hot weather drove up bidweek prices at Northwest Sumas and PG&E Citygate, two key trading points in the region. In contrast, Northeast hubs such as Algonquin Citygate and Columbia Gas saw significant declines.
