Wheat Futures Soar Amid Black Sea Port Shutdown
Chicago wheat futures experienced a limit up move on August 26, according to Sean Lusk from Walsh Trading. This surge was primarily driven by an unprecedented wheat supply shock caused by the shutdown of Russian and Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
Lusk notes that this event has no comparable precedent in the history of the modern grain market, surpassing even the 2010 Russian grain export ban and the first half of 2022 following the war began. The shutdown's impact on wheat supplies has been largely underpriced by the market until recently.
The CIA director's visit to Moscow may have also played a role in the market's sudden shift, although its exact influence remains unclear. Lusk points out that the chances of de-escalation remain low, and another round of escalation cannot be ruled out.
