Wheat Futures Tumble Amid Black Sea Export Disruptions
Wheat futures are expected to open lower on Wednesday at the Chicago Board of Trade after reaching a multi-year high. The market has rallied due to escalating attacks that have disrupted Russian and Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea region.
The recent surge in wheat prices was triggered by the escalation of attacks in Ukraine, which has led to a decline in grain exports. According to Ukraine's agriculture ministry, the country's grain exports declined by about 58% in August compared to a year earlier.
Russia, the world's biggest wheat exporter, has suspended export duties on grain until the end of 2026, but its foreign minister said there are no grounds to resume a deal that allowed the safe export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea. Turkey's president also emphasized the need for a mechanism to ensure the safety of commercial maritime transport in the region.
