Wheat Market Disruptions Mount as Russia-Ukraine Tensions Escalate
The global wheat market is experiencing disruptions due to ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Black Sea logistics remain a crucial support for wheat markets, but ocean-bound exports from Russia and Ukraine are severely disrupted.
Russia has attempted to redirect grain through Baltic and overland channels, but replacement capacity is limited, and Latvia's proposal of a 300% transit tariff on Russian and Belarusian grain may further complicate this alternative route. Ukraine remains heavily dependent on the Danube River, where vessel queues have reached approximately 80 ships.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict are ongoing, but the market is not convinced that a peace agreement is imminent. The global wheat market is not short of wheat in terms of supply, but exportable supplies have become more vulnerable to disruption.
