Wheat Market Rallies Amid Disruption and Supply Concerns
The global wheat market has been experiencing a firm tone over the past week, despite a slowdown in the rally as North American harvest advances. According to recent data, September Minneapolis spring wheat prices have risen by approximately 3.0% to $6.96/bu, while Chicago wheat prices have increased by 2.9% to $6.84/bu and Kansas City wheat prices have gone up by 1.3% to $7.54/bu.
The global wheat outlook has tightened due to concerns over production and logistics issues in major exporting regions such as Canada, the U.S., EU, Australia, and Argentina. The International Grains Council's latest report forecasts world wheat production near 817 MMT versus consumption of roughly 826 MMT, implying a modest drawdown in inventories.
However, stronger crops in importing regions like North Africa and Turkey are providing an offset to the tightening global market. Global trade is forecasted to decline by around 6% this year, resulting in less exportable wheat available. Nevertheless, several major buyers also require less wheat, which has contributed to futures strengthening without entering a full supply-driven rally.
