Wheat Market Surges on Wednesday Amidst Strong Harvest Pace
The wheat market is showing strength on Wednesday morning with significant gains in various contracts. According to Barchart, Chicago SRW contracts are up 3 ¾ to 8 ¾ cents across the board, while KC HRW futures are trading 3 ½ to 7 ¾ cents higher. In contrast, MPLS spring wheat is mixed, with some contracts down 1 ¼ to ¼ cent.
The recent price surge comes after a week of mostly higher trade on Tuesday, despite early losses. Open interest was down 3,675 contracts on Monday, but only 55 contracts on Tuesday, suggesting a rotation of ownership in the wheat complex.
This week's NASS Crop Progress report showed that 62% of US spring wheat has been harvested by Sunday, exceeding the normal pace by 10% and rising 21% from the previous week. The crop conditions were down 1%, with an overall good/excellent rating of 51%. The Brugler500 index is back down to 341, which is the final rating for the crop.
