Wheat Prices Plummet Amid Hopes for Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
A recent speculative drop in wheat prices on global exchanges has been triggered by hopes for an end to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
The price fluctuations are a response to various statements from politicians about possible reconciliation, including a meeting of Chinese, Indian, and Turkish leaders with Putin.
Putin stated that 'the Russian Federation is on the path to ending the conflict in Ukraine', but this has been met with increased shelling of Ukrainian cities.
Ongoing price swings have led to wheat quotes increasing by 4.2-11.2% over the past week, but then falling by 2-4.8% yesterday.
Specifically, prices fell by 2.6% to $270.4/t for soft winter SRW wheat in Chicago and by 4.8% to €233/t or $270/t for soft wheat on Euronext in Paris.
