Wheat Prices Plunge as Black Sea Disruptions Intensify
Chicago wheat futures declined on Monday after soaring to a three-year high the previous day due to disruptions in the Black Sea region. The price of CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) wheat fell by 0.54% to $7.79-3/4 per bushel.
The sharp drop in wheat prices came as corn and soybeans gained ground, with CBOT corn rising 0.8% to $5.40-3/4 a bushel and soybeans climbing 0.37% to $12.92-3/4 a bushel.
The disruption in the Black Sea region has led to an accumulation of agricultural produce at farms due to port closures and navigational disruptions, according to officials in Russia's Rostov Region who declared a 'state of emergency' on Friday.
Analysts expressed concerns that the Russian blockade on seaports could severely curtail exports, affecting Ukraine's planting campaign for 2027. Some importers have begun shifting their focus away from Russia and Ukraine to European Union countries such as Romania and France.
