Wheat Prices Soar 30% Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
The global wheat market has experienced a significant surge in prices, rising by 30% since June. This marks a record increase over the past decade, with wheat trading at approximately $290 per ton on world exchanges.
The main cause of this price hike is attributed to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, two major suppliers of wheat to the global market. The war has disrupted trade in the Black Sea region, making it challenging for countries like Bulgaria to export their wheat stocks.
Bulgaria currently holds over 7 million tons of wheat in storage, but due to the limited commercial shipping capacity in the Black Sea, these exports have been severely impacted. According to Radostina Zhekova, chairwoman of the Dobrudja Union of Grain Producers, 'Currently, we are exporting to whoever can find a trader. It is extremely difficult for us to participate in auctions.'
The difficulty in export has led to increased prices worldwide, with traders expecting further price hikes and corresponding margins.
