Global wheat prices have surged to their highest level since July 2023 due to fears of further escalation in Russia's war against Ukraine and disruptions to grain exports from the Black Sea region.

The price of wheat on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange rose by 2.6% during trading, following a 6.4% increase the previous day, according to Bloomberg.

Russia and Ukraine together account for more than a quarter of global wheat exports and are major suppliers of barley, corn, and sunflower oil.

Market analysts warn that further reductions in shipments from the Black Sea could lead to price increases as importers seek alternative sources, possibly driving up costs for countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
