Wheat Prices Soar Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine
Global wheat prices have surged due to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. According to Ukrinform, Electronic Grain Exchange reported that wheat quotations on global exchanges rose by 3.7% to 6.6%. This marks a significant increase in prices since the start of the season and year-on-year.
The Chicago SRW soft red winter wheat futures increased by 6.6% to $268.4 per tonne, up 23% since the start of the season and 27% year-on-year. In Kansas City, HRW hard red winter wheat rose by 5% to $291 per tonne, up 25% and 36.6% respectively.
Analysts warn that rising grain prices will drive up costs for meat, milk, eggs, and vegetable oil, heightening the risk of a major global food crisis. The escalation of Russia's war against Ukraine has led to heavy shelling and ballistic strikes on Ukrainian ports and cities.
