Wheat Prices Soar on Black Sea Tensions and Upcoming Production Data
The wheat market is experiencing an unexpected surge due to recent events in the Black Sea region. On Wednesday, Chicago SRW contracts saw gains ranging from 7 to 11 cents per contract, while KC HRW futures and MPLS spring wheat followed suit with losses of 8 to 15 1/4 cents across the board.
The sudden movement is attributed to a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia's Novorossiysk port overnight. The port, which serves as the country's largest, was forced to halt operations following the attacks.
Market analysts are keeping a close eye on these developments, as well as the upcoming release of updated production data for wheat by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) on Wednesday. According to Reuters, surveyed analysts expect 1.525 billion bushels (bbu) of wheat, representing an 11 million bushel decrease from July.
US ending stocks are forecasted at 715 million bushels, a 7 million bushel drop from last month's numbers. The European Commission has also released data showing EU soft wheat exports totaling 1.01 million metric tons (MTT) from July 1 to August 9, down from the same period last year.
