Wheat Prices Surge Amid Black Sea Export Disruptions
Global agricultural commodity prices are experiencing their strongest monthly rise in over a decade. The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index, which tracks 10 major commodities, has risen by more than 13% for the month as of last week.
The main driver of this rally is wheat, with prices reaching a three-year high due to growing risks to supplies from the Black Sea region. Attacks on port infrastructure and shipping have slowed exports from Ukraine and Russia, which together account for over a quarter of global wheat exports.
Rising energy and transportation costs amid the war in Iran are also putting pressure on agricultural markets. The combination of higher commodity, energy, and logistics costs is fueling concerns about another acceleration in food inflation and higher prices for basic food products.
