Wheat Prices Surge Amid Escalating Russia-Ukraine Conflict
The global wheat market is experiencing a sharp shift as Chicago wheat prices hit a three-year high. The rally is attributed to concerns that the war between Russia and Ukraine could escalate, further disrupting supplies from one of the world's most important breadbaskets.
Russia's decision to prepare for intensified attacks on Ukraine, including infrastructure targets, has sparked worries about logistical constraints in the Black Sea region. According to Chris Nikolaou, general manager of Advantage Grain, 'If we don't get a resolution in the Black Sea, and an improvement in shipping access without threat to their security, the rally will continue.'
Russia and Ukraine account for more than a quarter of global exports, including wheat, barley, corn, and sunflower oil. The conflict has already damaged ports and grain terminals, curbing shipments from the top exporting region.
